From our Patron
As Patron of Sport Fly Fishing NZ, and of the Commonwealth Fly Fishers Assn, it is my great pleasure to confirm that the 2020 Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championship will be held in NZ from March 17th – 22nd, 2020, based at the Wairakei Resort Hotel, near Taupo.
On behalf of the President of SFFNZ, Mr Gareth Godfrey and the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mr Malcolm Crosse (past VP of CFFA), I invite you to join us in Taupo for what promises to be a wonderful event. The many SFFNZ members and our wonderful volunteers are determined to ensure that this event will be well worth the long journey to “God’s Own Country”. We just hope you will have enough time to enjoy not only that part of the North Island where the competition is based, but also some of our other beautiful countryside, wineries and rivers.
As usual, we expect every member of every team and their guests to uphold the CFFA ideal of “Fishing in Friendship”. It is this ideal which distinguishes this competition from so many other ones around the world. It is also this ideal for which our top award is named, i.e. The Friendship Trophy. This is awarded by one vote from each of the teams present, to the team which in their view best exemplifies true sportsmanship and friendship to their colleagues.
With that in mind, anyone needing help to arrange pre-match accommodation, transport, practice etc., please do not hesitate to contact us. We will be happy to help you ensure your visit to NZ is everything you hope for.
In addition to the main fishing competition, we will again have a Casting Competition on the last day, after everyone arrives back from the morning session. If possible we will also arrange a fly tying demonstration or competition to emphasise the importance flies have to our beloved sport. All attendees (including guests) may participate in the casting competition which will be held on the grounds of the hotel (using your own gear!!).
I look forward to seeing you in NZ early next year. Let’s all enjoy this growing competition, started so many years ago in England by Arthur Humbert, Jason Garrett Snr and Tony Paulson. Sadly, two of these are no longer here to see how their idea has grown into a truly round-the-world meeting of sport fly fishers.
Tight lines to all
Patron SFFNZ & CFFA.
